WHITE DRAGON FRUIT TREE SEEDS (Hylocereus undatus)

The White Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus undatus), also known as Pitaya or Strawberry Pear, is a fast-growing tropical climbing cactus prized for its large exotic flowers and delicious nutrient-rich fruit. Native to Mexico and Central and South America, this unusual cactus vine is widely cultivated throughout tropical and subtropical regions for both ornamental beauty and edible fruit production.

Dragon Fruit grows on long, sprawling, climbing stems that can reach 15–20 feet in length and may live for decades under ideal conditions. The fleshy green stems are triangular and segmented with aerial roots that allow the plant to climb trellises, fences, and vertical supports.

One of the most spectacular features of the plant is its enormous fragrant nocturnal flowers, which can reach 10–12 inches long and 6–7 inches wide. These stunning white blooms open at night and are among the largest flowers produced by any cactus species.

The fruit is oval to oblong with bright red skin and white flesh speckled with tiny black seeds. Dragon Fruit has a mildly sweet flavor often compared to a blend of kiwi, pear, and melon. Mature fruits commonly weigh 1–2 pounds.

🌱 Growing & Care Information

Light: Full sun preferred
Soil: Well-drained sandy or organic-rich soil
Water: Moderate; drought tolerant once established
Growth: Fast-growing tropical climbing cactus
Climate: Warm tropical to subtropical climates

Dragon Fruit tolerates heat, humidity, drought, and poor soils, but produces the best fruit with regular watering and nutrient-rich soil. Although drought tolerant, it requires more moisture than desert cactus species and should be watered when the soil becomes dry approximately one inch below the surface.

This species also performs very well in large containers, greenhouses, patios, and indoor sunrooms in cooler climates.

USDA Hardiness Zones: 10–12

Dragon Fruit Germination:

1) Soak seeds in water for 36 hours.

2) Use a heated propagator mat to keep the soil at 80-85 degrees F.

3) Use a well mixed & well draining seed starting mix, and plant the seeds appx. 1/4-3/8" inches deep.

4) Use a grow light, or keep them in a sunny window.

5) Keep soil moist, but not wet at all times.

6) Dragon Fruit seeds are small & fragile, so use a spray bottle to mist them so the seeds don't get jostled & buried to deep as that will cause them to rot.

7) Germination is erratic and can occur anywhere from 1-8 weeks, so don't toss out any that don't sprout quickly.
