Texas Mountain Laurel Flower Tree Seeds (Sophora secundiflora)

The Sophora secundiflora, commonly known as the Texas Mountain Laurel or Mescal Bean, is a highly ornamental evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its intensely fragrant purple flowers, glossy foliage, and exceptional drought tolerance. Native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, this striking species is widely admired for its toughness and ornamental beauty in warm-climate landscapes.

Known for its dense dark green evergreen foliage, Texas Mountain Laurel produces dramatic hanging clusters of bluish-purple to deep violet flowers in spring. The blossoms are highly fragrant and are famously described as smelling similar to grape soda or sweet artificial grape candy.

Following flowering, the plant develops semi-woody seed pods containing bright glossy red seeds that add additional ornamental interest. While visually striking, the seeds are highly toxic if ingested and should not be consumed.

This species typically grows as a dense shrub or small ornamental tree and is highly valued for xeriscaping, desert landscapes, and low-water gardens due to its outstanding heat and drought resistance.

If not, soak for another 12 hours.

2) Plant seeds appx. 1/2" inch deep in well draining seed starting mix.

3) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil between 75-80 degrees F.
