ITALIAN CYPRESS TREE SEEDS (Cupressus sempervirens ‘Stricta’)

The Cupressus sempervirens, commonly known as Italian Cypress, is a highly valued evergreen tree prized for its tall, narrow, columnar form and striking architectural presence in the landscape. Native to the Mediterranean region, this classic ornamental conifer has been widely planted in formal gardens, estates, and urban landscapes for its elegant vertical structure and strong visual impact.

Known for its dense, upright growth habit, Italian Cypress forms a naturally tight column that typically reaches 40–60 feet tall while remaining only 3–5 feet wide. Its strong vertical lines make it ideal for accent plantings, driveway borders, windbreaks, and privacy screens where space is limited but height is desired.

This species is fast-growing and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. It performs best in warm, dry climates and is highly drought tolerant once established. Italian Cypress does not tolerate overly wet soil or high humidity, making proper drainage and air circulation essential for long-term health and structure.

The foliage consists of deep green, scale-like leaves arranged tightly along upright branches, giving the tree its signature dense and formal appearance year-round.

Italian Cypress Germination:

1) Stratify seeds in a moist (not soggy) sand or peat mix in the refrigerator for 30–45 days.

2) Plant seeds very lightly covered (about ⅛ inch) in a fast-draining seed starting mix.

3) Keep the soil evenly moist and maintain a temperature of 65–75°F. Provide bright, indirect light, as Italian cypress seeds germinate best with light exposure.

4) Expect sprouts in 3–6 weeks, and transplant once several true leaves form.
