Splash Heliconia Seeds (Heliconia champneiana)
The Heliconia champneiana ‘Splash’, commonly known as Splash Heliconia, is a bold and striking tropical perennial prized for its vivid red and yellow variegated bracts that create a dramatic “painted splash” effect. Native to tropical regions, this exotic ornamental plant is widely grown for its lush foliage and highly decorative inflorescences that bring a true jungle aesthetic to gardens and landscapes.
Known for its upright, banana-like leaves and vibrant lobster claw-style bracts, Splash Heliconia produces intense color contrast that makes it a standout focal plant in any tropical setting. The colorful bracts, which are often mistaken for flowers, attract hummingbirds and other pollinators due to their bright coloration and tubular structure.
This tropical perennial typically grows 6–10 feet tall in ideal conditions, forming dense clumps of large foliage that create a bold, lush backdrop in the landscape. Its growth habit makes it ideal for tropical borders, privacy screens, and exotic garden designs.
Splash Heliconia thrives in warm, humid environments and performs best in rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture. In cooler climates, it can be successfully grown in containers and moved indoors or into greenhouses during colder months.

Heliconia Germination:
1) Scarify the seeds by rubbing with rough grit sandpaper, and make a few very shallow nicks with a small blade.
2) Soak seeds for 4 days, being sure to change water daily.
3) Use a well mixed and well draining soil, adding 15% sand or perlite.
4) Plant seeds no more than 3/4" inch deep.
5) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil between 80-85 degrees, while keeping moist but not overly wet.
6) Use a humidity dome, or a small piece of plastic on top of treys or containers to help retain humidity.
7) Like most tropical seeds, Heliconia seeds have erratic germination. Some may sprout in 4 weeks while others can take up to 6 months so don't toss out any that do not sprout quickly.
