RED TORCH GINGER FLOWER SEEDS (Etlingera elatior)
The Red Torch Ginger (Etlingera elatior) is a striking tropical perennial known for its dramatic, architectural flower spikes and vibrant ornamental appeal. Native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Southern Thailand, this exotic plant has been cultivated throughout tropical regions worldwide for both its beauty and practical uses.
Torch Ginger produces tall, upright stalks that emerge from underground rhizomes, forming thick, fibrous green stems that can reach up to 1 meter in height or more. At the top of each stalk, large, tightly layered bracts form a flame-like, teardrop-shaped bloom, giving the plant its distinctive “torch” appearance.
As the flower matures, the bracts gradually open to reveal smaller inner blossoms, creating a bold and colorful tropical display. The buds are often harvested while still closed and are known for their crisp texture and aromatic, slightly ginger-like fragrance with subtle citrus notes.
Beyond its ornamental value, Torch Ginger has a long history of traditional use in tropical cuisines and herbal practices. The plant contains natural compounds and nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and vitamin K, and is appreciated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in traditional systems.
