Red Sunset Maple Tree Seeds (Acer rubrum)
The Acer rubrum, commonly known as Red Sunset Maple or Red Maple, is a fast-growing ornamental shade tree prized for its spectacular seasonal color and adaptability. This deciduous maple is widely planted throughout North America for its brilliant autumn foliage, attractive branching habit, and rapid growth rate.
Red Sunset Maple provides vibrant color throughout the year. New foliage often emerges with reddish tones before maturing into rich green leaves during summer. In autumn, the tree develops breathtaking displays of deep crimson, scarlet, orange, and golden-yellow foliage that make it one of the most visually striking landscape maples available.
During late winter to early spring, clusters of small red flowers appear along the branches before or during leaf emergence, adding additional seasonal interest. The tree also produces paired winged seeds that mature in spring and are dispersed naturally by wind.
This species typically grows 40–60 feet tall with a broad rounded crown reaching approximately 40 feet wide at maturity. It adapts well to a wide range of soil types including loamy, sandy, silty, clay, and moist soils, and tolerates wetter conditions better than many other maple species.
Red Sunset Maple grows at a medium to fast rate and performs best in full sun to partial shade. Its adaptability and brilliant fall display make it a favorite for landscaping, shade planting, and even bonsai cultivation.

Sunset Maple Germination:
1)Â Remove the papery wing from the seed. Put the seeds in a heat-proof container and pour hot water over them. The water temperature should be no higher than 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
2)Â Allow the maple seeds to soak for at least 24 hours or up to two days.
3)Â Drain the water and place the seeds in a plastic bag filled with peat moss or vermiculite. Moisten the mixture with a small amount of water.Â
4)Â Poke a few small holes in the bag to allow for air circulation.
5)Â Put the bag of seeds in the refrigerator for approximately 30 days. This stratification process breaks down the seed coats and prepares them for germination. When you remove the seeds, you may see small roots growing from the tips, indicating that the seeds have begun to germinate, and are ready to be potted. Keep the roots between 65 to 70 degrees for the first two weeks.
