Red Abyssinian Banana Seeds (Ensete ventricosum) – Rare False Banana Plant

The Red Abyssinian Banana, also known as Ensete ventricosum, is a truly spectacular and rare tropical plant prized for its massive size, dramatic foliage, and striking red coloration. Although commonly called a “False Banana,” this plant is grown for its bold ornamental impact rather than fruit production.

This fast-growing banana relative develops an enormous trunk that can reach up to 3 feet in diameter, supporting huge paddle-shaped leaves that grow 10–20 feet long and 2–4 feet wide. The foliage is intensely eye-catching, featuring deep green tops with rich carmine-red undersides and ribs, making it one of the most dramatic banana plants available.

In warm climates, Ensete ventricosum grows 12–20 feet tall, and under ideal tropical conditions can reach an astonishing 30–40 feet. In cooler regions, it performs beautifully as a summer bedding plant and can be overwintered by cutting it back and mulching, or grown as a container plant and brought indoors. Once warm weather returns, it resumes extremely fast growth.

The Red Abyssinian Banana produces non-showy flowers and dry, inedible fruits, as this plant is cultivated exclusively for its architectural form and foliage. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, enjoys consistent moisture during active growth, and becomes more drought-tolerant while dormant in cooler months.

Red Abyssinian Germination:

1) Soak seeds for 36 hours, changing the water daily.

2) Fill a clean 3" plastic pot with multi purpose compost.

3) Pour boiling water over the compost to sterilize it, and allow it to drain.

4) Once the compost has cooled, push one seed into each pot in as deep as the seed is large.

5) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil at 80+ F. Cover with plastic to help keep the compost moist at all times. "Warm & Wet is the Key"

6) As with any tropical or exotic seed, germination will be erratic. One or two may sprout within a few weeks, but most can take up to 6 months so don't toss them out. Check them periodically for fungus or mold. If found, use a copper based fungicide the clean them off with. Rinse them really well and replant in new, "sterilized" compost.

Una o dos pueden brotar en unas pocas semanas, pero la mayoría puede tardar hasta 6 meses, así que no las deseche. Revíselas periódicamente para ver si tienen hongos o moho. Si los encuentra, use un fungicida a base de cobre para limpiarlas. Enjuáguelas muy bien y vuelva a plantarlas en abono nuevo "esterilizado".
