Purple Blazing Star Flower Seeds (Liatris spicata)

The Liatris spicata, commonly known as Purple Blazing Star or Gayfeather, is a striking native North American perennial wildflower prized for its tall spikes of vivid purple blooms and exceptional value to pollinators. This hardy prairie species is widely planted in butterfly gardens, native landscapes, perennial borders, rain gardens, and cottage-style plantings.

Purple Blazing Star produces upright flower spikes covered in bright purple bottlebrush-like blooms that open from the top downward, creating a unique and eye-catching floral display from mid to late summer. These nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators.

The plant forms dense clumps of narrow grass-like green foliage at the base, while flowering stalks typically reach heights of 3–6 feet tall. Its vertical growth habit makes it an excellent accent plant in mixed perennial beds and prairie-style landscapes.

This low-maintenance species grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers average to moist, well-drained soils with acidic to neutral pH. Unlike some other blazing star species, Liatris spicata tolerates moist soils particularly well and adapts to summer heat and humidity with ease.

Blazing Star Germination:

1) Cold stratify in a zip lock bag filled with moist vermiculite. Place inside the fridge for 60 days.

2) Plant the seeds in a seed starting mix, barely covering with just a dusting of soil. Keep near the top, planting no more than 1/16 of an inch deep. Use a spray bottle to mist them when needed.

3) Place them where they will receive morning sun, or place under a grow lamp for 6 hours in the mornings.

4) Use a heated propagator mat to keep the soil between 68-70 degrees F.

5) Expect germination anytime between 20-45 days.
