Northern Sugar Maple Tree Seeds (Acer saccharum)

The Acer saccharum, commonly known as Sugar Maple or Northern Sugar Maple, is a long-lived deciduous hardwood tree famous for its brilliant autumn foliage and its importance in maple syrup production. Native to eastern North America, this iconic species is widely valued for both its ornamental beauty and economic significance.

Sugar Maple is best known for producing some of the most spectacular fall color displays of any tree species, with leaves turning vibrant shades of red, orange, and golden yellow. The intensity of coloration is often strongest in trees grown in full sun, particularly on the most exposed or south-facing branches.

This species is also the primary source of maple syrup and is prized for its dense, strong wood—often referred to as “rock maple.” The wood is widely used in furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and musical instruments due to its durability and fine grain.

Sugar Maple can live for several centuries, with some specimens reaching up to 500 years of age. It grows best in cool climates with moist, well-drained, fertile soils rich in organic matter. While it prefers full sun, young trees can tolerate partial shade and benefit from protection during early growth stages.

Sugar Maple Germination:

1) Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.

2) Mix seeds with moist peat moss or sand. Place in a zip lock bag and store in the fridge for 90 days to cold stratify.

3) Check moisture throughout stratification to ensure they stay slightly damp, while also being sure to watch for any signs of mold or mildew. Clean any effected seeds by soaking in a 10% hydrogen peroxide & 90% water mix for 15 mins...then rinse well before replanting.

4) Plant seeds in well draining and well mixed seed starting mix at 1/2" to 3/4" inch deep.

5) Keep around 70 degrees F, with bright indirect light.

6) Expect germination within 14 to 28 days.
