Nanking Cherry Tree Seeds (Prunus tomentosa) Dwarf Hardy Fruit Shrub

The Prunus tomentosa, commonly known as Nanking Cherry or Chinese Bush Cherry, is a hardy deciduous fruiting shrub valued for its ornamental spring blossoms and tart edible cherries. Native to northern and western China, Mongolia, and parts of Russia, this tough shrub is widely grown in cold-climate gardens and edible landscapes.

Nanking Cherry produces a dense, rounded form typically reaching 6–10 feet tall, making it ideal for hedges, windbreaks, and small orchard plantings. In early spring, the plant is covered in abundant white to pale pink flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators and provide striking seasonal display.

Following flowering, small bright red cherries develop along the branches. These tart fruits are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and are commonly used for jams, jellies, pies, and fresh eating in cooler climates.

This species is extremely cold hardy, tolerating harsh winter conditions and wide temperature swings. It prefers full sun for best fruit production and adapts well to a variety of soils, particularly well-drained sandy or slightly alkaline conditions.

Nanking Cherry is widely used in edible landscapes, wildlife plantings, and low-maintenance hedgerows due to its reliability, productivity, and ornamental value.

Nanking Cherry Germination:

1) Scarify seeds by rubbing with rough grit sandpaper, and nick a few shallow places in the seed shell, being careful not to go deep.

2) Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.

3) Seeds need cold stratification to break dormancy. Place seeds in a zip lock bag filled with moist peat moss or vermiculite. Place inside the fridge for 100 days. Periodically check to ensure they stay slightly moist, but not overly wet. Using a spray bottle to mist when needed is the easiest way.

4) Plant seeds appx. 1/4" deep, and keep the soil at 75 degrees F.

5) Expect germination within 2-4 weeks.
