Mountain Blue Cornflower Seeds (Centaurea montana)

The Centaurea montana, commonly known as Mountain Blue Cornflower or Perennial Cornflower, is a hardy flowering perennial prized for its striking violet-blue blooms and long-lasting garden performance. Native to the mountain meadows and woodland edges of Europe, this resilient wildflower is widely grown for its vibrant color and easy-care nature.

This species produces large, showy thistle-like flowers with deeply fringed petals in a rich violet-blue shade during late spring. The blooms are highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. If cut back after its first flowering, it will often rebloom again in early fall, extending its seasonal display.

Mountain Blue Cornflower is a compact perennial, typically growing 12–24 inches tall with a spread of about 18 inches. Its mounded form and bright blooms make it ideal for borders, cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, and container planting.

This species is highly adaptable and drought tolerant once established, thriving in well-drained soils and full sun conditions. It is also easy to grow from seed and requires minimal maintenance, making it suitable for beginner gardeners as well as experienced growers.

Mountain Blue Germination:

1) Fill pots or treys with a commercial seed starting mix, being sure the containers are at least 3 inches deep.

2) Moisten the soil, and sow 3 seeds per container. Cover with only 1/2 inch of soil as it is very important that it stays dark with no light.

3) Cover the containers with plastic to retain moisture and keep high humidity levels.

4) Use a heated propagator mat to be sure that temperatures stay at 70 degrees F, or a few degrees higher.

5) Expect germination in 3-4 weeks. Be sure to remove the plastic as soon as they germinate and then give them bright light, but not full sun at first.
