Mayan Gold Heliconia Seeds (Heliconia champneana)
The Heliconia champneana, commonly known as Mayan Gold Heliconia, Lobster Claw, or Parrot Beak Flower, is a striking tropical ornamental plant prized for its vivid golden-yellow flowering bracts and lush banana-like foliage. Native to southern Mexico and Central America, this exotic species is widely cultivated in tropical gardens for its dramatic appearance and long-lasting blooms.
Known for its upright clusters of bright yellow to golden bracts, this Heliconia creates a bold tropical display that instantly transforms landscapes into lush jungle-style gardens. Its unique flower structures resemble lobster claws or exotic bird beaks, giving the plant its popular common names. The true flowers are small and hidden inside the colorful bracts, which provide the plant’s primary ornamental appeal.
This medium-sized Heliconia typically grows 6–7 feet tall and features large paddle-shaped leaves closely related to the banana family. It performs well in tropical landscapes, greenhouse environments, and large patio containers where warmth and humidity can be maintained.
Mayan Gold Heliconia blooms from late spring through summer, though under ideal tropical conditions it may flower nearly year-round. It thrives in rich, moist soil and appreciates regular watering during active growth.

Heliconia Germination:
1) Scarify the seeds by rubbing with rough grit sandpaper, and make a few very shallow nicks with a small blade.
2) Soak seeds for 4 days, being sure to change water daily.
3) Use a well mixed and well draining soil, adding 15% sand or perlite.
4) Plant seeds no more than 3/4" inch deep.
5) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil between 80-85 degrees, while keeping moist but not overly wet.
6) Use a humidity dome, or a small piece of plastic on top of treys or containers to help retain humidity.
7) Like most tropical seeds, Heliconia seeds have erratic germination. Some may sprout in 4 weeks while others can take up to 6 months so don't toss out any that do not sprout quickly.
