Chinese Kousa “Milky Way” Dogwood Tree Seeds (Cornus kousa)
The Cornus kousa, commonly known as Kousa Dogwood or Chinese Dogwood, is a highly ornamental deciduous tree prized for its elegant branching habit, abundant white flowers, edible red fruits, and brilliant autumn foliage. The “Milky Way” form is especially valued for its exceptionally heavy flowering display that blankets the tree in creamy white blooms during late spring to early summer.
This beautiful small landscape tree typically grows 15–30 feet tall and wide, forming a graceful rounded canopy that provides year-round ornamental interest. In early summer, large four-petaled white bracts appear above the foliage, creating one of the most spectacular flowering displays among ornamental dogwoods.
Following flowering, the tree produces unique raspberry-like red fruits that are edible and attractive to birds and wildlife. The foliage later transforms into rich shades of reddish-purple and burgundy during autumn, adding further seasonal color to the landscape.
Kousa Dogwood thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soils with slightly acidic conditions and performs best with morning sun and some afternoon protection in hotter climates. Although it appreciates consistent moisture, it is generally more drought tolerant than native flowering dogwoods once established.
This species is widely used as a specimen tree, ornamental focal point, patio tree, or wildlife-friendly landscape planting due to its elegant form and multi-season beauty.

Kousa Germination:
1) Scarify seeds with a piece of rough grit sandpaper, then place in a bowl of very hot water for 12 hours.
2) Cold stratify by placing seeds in a zip lock bag filled with moist peat moss or vermiculite. Place in the fridge for 90 days. This will break the seeds dormancy.
3) Sow no more than 1/2" inch deep in well draining seed starting mix.
4) Keep in bright light, and use a heated propagator mat to keep them around 78 degrees F.
5) Germination will start to occur within 4 months. Kousa has erratic germination so don't toss any that don't sprout early as some can take up to 18 months to sprout.
