Judas Tree Seeds (Cercis siliquastrum)

The Cercis siliquastrum, commonly known as the Judas Tree or Mediterranean Redbud, is a small to medium-sized deciduous ornamental tree admired for its striking spring blossoms and unique flowering habit. Native to southern Europe and western Asia, this species is widely cultivated as a decorative landscape and garden tree.

The name “Judas Tree” is traditionally associated with the belief that Judas Iscariot is said to have hanged himself from this tree, though it is also commonly known by more pleasant names such as the Love Tree and Mediterranean Redbud. In spring, the tree produces abundant clusters of vivid pink to purple pea-like flowers that bloom directly on the trunk and mature branches, a botanical feature known as cauliflory.

Following flowering, the tree develops flat, purple-tinged seed pods that persist into late summer, adding additional ornamental interest. The heart-shaped leaves emerge green and provide a lush canopy that turns golden-yellow in autumn.

Judas Tree typically grows 15–25 feet tall and wide, forming a broad, rounded crown. It performs best in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. Once established, it is relatively hardy and drought tolerant but should be planted carefully as it does not transplant well after maturity.

1) Rub seeds with rough grit sandpaper to scarify. Soak in Very Hot water for 24hrs.

2) Cold stratify by placing seeds in a zip lock bag filled with moist peat moss or vermiculite for 60 days. Leave 1 inch of the corner open for air circulation. Periodically check to ensure they don't dry out. Mist with a spray bottle as to not over wet them.

3) Plant seeds in a well draining seed starting mix. Plant near a window with filtered light, or use a grow lamp. Do not expose to full sun.

4) Use a heated propagator mat to keep the soil at 75 degrees.

5) Expect germination within 2-3 weeks.

No exponga a pleno sol.
