Hummingbird Tree Seeds (Sesbania grandiflora) Fast Growing Agati Flower Tree
The Sesbania grandiflora, commonly known as the Hummingbird Tree or Agati, is a fast-growing tropical tree prized for its striking flowers, edible uses, and ability to thrive in warm climates. Native to South and Southeast Asia, this species is widely cultivated across tropical regions worldwide for both ornamental and traditional purposes.
This small to medium-sized evergreen tree grows rapidly under ideal tropical conditions, often reaching 20–50 feet tall. It features an open branching structure with soft, light gray bark and finely divided pinnate leaves composed of many small leaflets, giving it a delicate, airy appearance in the landscape.
One of its most distinctive features is its large, showy flowers, which may appear in shades of white, pink, or red depending on variation. These blooms are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable wildlife-supporting tree.
The Hummingbird Tree thrives in full sun and warm, humid environments. It is highly adaptable to a range of soils, including poorer and waterlogged conditions, and can tolerate both acidic and alkaline soils. However, it is extremely frost-sensitive and must be grown only in tropical or subtropical climates.

Hummingbird Germination:
These seeds have a real hard seed coat and need scarification before sowing to help & speed up germination. This can usually be done by sanding the hard shell of the seed with rough grit sandpaper, then pour a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 24-38 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a small shallow nick in the seed's coat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours. It is Very Important to use a heated propagated heat mat under your tray at least 78 Degrees F before sowing. Germination can take any where from 2 weeks to several months as with any Tropical or Exotic Seed. The propagator will help speed up some of them. But, Patience is needed for most of these seeds, but they're more than Well Worth the Wait!
