GOLDEN CHAIN TREE SEEDS (Laburnum anagyroides)
The Golden Chain Tree (Laburnum anagyroides), also known as Golden Rain Tree, is a spectacular spring-flowering ornamental tree prized for its long, cascading chains of golden-yellow blooms. When in flower, this tree creates a dramatic display of pendulous racemes that resemble yellow wisteria, making it one of the most striking flowering trees for temperate landscapes.
This fast-growing, large, spreading tree is valued not only for its breathtaking blooms, but also for its attractive cut foliage, which gives the tree an elegant appearance even when not in flower. The fragrant flowers appear in late spring, followed by decorative silvery seed pods that add additional visual interest.
Golden Chain Tree makes an exceptional specimen planting and is especially stunning when grown over archways, pergolas, or walkways, where its golden flower chains can hang freely and be fully appreciated. It thrives best in cooler climates and does not perform well in hot southern regions.

🌱 Growing Information:
Golden Chain Tree grows best in organically rich, well-drained soils with medium moisture. Sharp drainage is essential, as the tree does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade—full sun is ideal in northern climates, while light afternoon shade is beneficial in warmer summer regions.
This species is best suited for cooler temperate climates and does not perform well south of USDA Zone 7.
USDA Growing Zones: 5–7
Golden Chain Germination:
1) Scarify first by sanding the seed shells with rough grit sand paper, but never too deep.
2) Place the seeds in a heat proof container and pour hot (not boiling!) water 70-80 degrees Celsius over them and leave them to soak for between 12-24 hours. Seeds that have been successfully pretreated will have swollen to around 3 times their previous size. Remove all swollen seeds as these will be damaged by further pretreatments. These can be sown immediately. This hot water treatment can be repeated up to 3 times, making the water a little hotter each time. Seeds that remain small need to be dried for further treatment.
3) Plant seeds in pots or seed trays of good quality compost at a depth of about 1/2" inch deep. The seed usually germinates in under 4 weeks at 70°F. It is important that temperatures or not greatly higher than this or germination will be reduced.
