Golden Barrel Cactus Seeds (Echinocactus grusonii)

The Echinocactus grusonii, commonly known as Golden Barrel Cactus or Golden Ball Cactus, is one of the most recognizable ornamental cactus species in the world. Native to Mexico, this iconic desert plant is highly prized for its perfectly rounded shape, bright golden spines, and dramatic architectural appearance in xeriscapes, rock gardens, patios, and succulent collections.

This slow-growing cactus develops a large globular stem that can eventually reach up to 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide under ideal outdoor conditions. The stem is heavily ribbed and lined with dense golden-yellow spines that provide the classic desert cactus appearance sought after by collectors and landscape designers.

At the crown of the cactus, soft white woolly hairs develop near the growing point. Mature outdoor specimens may produce yellow flowers during mid to late summer, although flowering is uncommon when grown indoors or in containers. The species is primarily cultivated for its bold sculptural form and striking golden coloration rather than its blooms.

Golden Barrel Cactus thrives in bright sunlight and dry conditions, requiring minimal care once established. Like most desert cacti, it is highly drought tolerant and sensitive to overwatering, which is one of the most common causes of failure in cultivation.

Golden Barrel Cactus Germination:

1) Soak the seeds for 24 hours in room temperature water.

2) Fill a trey 3/4 of the way to the top with half sand, and half cactus starting mix. Be sure it's moist, not wet.

3) Scatter 2-3 seeds per compartment on top of the soil. Then cover the seeds with a very light layer of sand.

4) Put the seed tray in a plastic bag and seal it with a twist tie.

5) Use a heated propagator mat to keep the soil at 80 degrees F. Keep under a bright light, but not direct sunlight.

6) Keep soil slightly moist while waiting on germination. Misting with a spray bottle is best to avoid getting too wet.

7) Expect seeds to germinate within 1-2 months. Then take the bag off and place in a sunny area.
