Giant White Bird of Paradise Seeds (Strelitzia nicolai)

The Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a spectacular tropical ornamental plant prized for its enormous banana-like foliage and striking white crane-shaped flowers. Native to South Africa, this dramatic species is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical landscapes for its lush exotic appearance and architectural growth habit.

Known for its massive fan-shaped leaves and towering clumping form, Giant White Bird of Paradise creates a bold tropical statement in landscapes, patios, poolsides, and large containers. The foliage resembles banana plants and grows from underground rhizomes that slowly expand into dense upright clumps over time.

This species can reach heights of up to 20 feet in ideal outdoor conditions and produces stunning white and blue-black flowers that resemble exotic tropical birds in flight. Mature healthy plants may bloom repeatedly throughout the year in warm climates, with flowers emerging on long upright stalks above the foliage.

Bird of Paradise flowers are rich in nectar and attract birds and pollinators in their native habitat. The unusual seeds feature bright orange fuzzy tufts that give them a highly exotic appearance.

Bird of Paradise Germination:

1) Knick the seed shells with a file or small knife and soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 3 days. Change water daily.

2) Remove the bright orange tuft of hairs after you have soaked the seeds.

3) Use a heated propagator to keep a bottom heat of 85-90°F. This will help increase the germination rate and speed.

4) Seeds should be planted 1 Inch deep in moistened, high quality potting mix. Cover the pot with plastic to retain humidity and keep the soil moist. Uncover daily for a few minuntes of fresh air. The seeds should germinate in one to three months if kept moist. Be patient as with any Tropical or Exotic, germination times are always erratic. Don't toss any early as they all have their own time as They're well worth your wait.
