Dwarf Palmetto Palm Tree Seeds (Sabal minor) Cold Hardy Fan Palm
The Sabal minor, commonly known as Dwarf Palmetto, is a cold-hardy evergreen palm native to the southeastern United States. Valued for its tropical appearance, exceptional hardiness, and low-maintenance nature, this compact fan palm is an excellent choice for landscapes well beyond the typical range of most palm species.
Dwarf Palmetto produces attractive fan-shaped leaves with deep divisions that create a lush, tropical effect in gardens and landscapes. Unlike many palms, it remains relatively compact, typically reaching 4 to 6 feet in height and spread, making it ideal for smaller spaces and foundation plantings.
During summer, the plant produces fragrant yellowish-white flowers that attract pollinators. These are followed by shiny black fruits that provide food for birds and other wildlife. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and structure in the landscape.
This adaptable palm thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, including moist soils, poor drainage, periodic drought, and moderate salt exposure. It is especially useful in coastal gardens, rain gardens, pond margins, and naturalized plantings.

Dwarf Palmetto Germination:
1) Soak seeds in water for 48 hours.
2) Optional 30 day stratification period will increase germination rate. Place inside of a zip lock bag filled with moist peat moss or vermiculite. Keep in the fridge for 30 days.
3) Use well draining seed starting mix, planting seeds 1/2" inch deep.
4) Use a heated propagator mat to keep temperature at 80-85 degrees F. during the day, while dropping the temperature to 70 degrees at night. Alternating temperatures will speed up germination and increase germination rates.
5) As with any palm seed, germination is erratic, with seeds sprouting at different times. Germination can occur anywhere between 3-4 weeks, with some taking up to 4 months so do not toss any out that do not sprout early, they just need more time.
