Dawn Redwood Seeds (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a rare and ancient “living fossil” tree once believed extinct until rediscovered in the 1940s. Today it remains a prized ornamental species valued for its rapid growth, graceful shape, and stunning seasonal color.
Unlike most conifers, the Dawn Redwood is deciduous, producing soft, feathery bright green foliage that turns rich orange-brown to reddish-bronze in autumn before dropping for winter. This dramatic seasonal change makes it one of the most visually striking large landscape trees available.
This fast-growing tree develops a neat pyramidal form when young, maturing into a broad, rounded crown with impressive height. Mature trees commonly reach 70–100 feet tall with a spread of about 25 feet, making them ideal for large yards, parks, or statement plantings.
Dawn Redwood also produces small round cones about ½–1 inch in size and transplants easily compared to many other large conifers. Its fast growth and naturally tapered trunk also make it one of the best species for bonsai cultivation, where it responds well to shaping and pruning.

Dawn Redwood Germination:
1) As with all Redwoods, germination of seeds is slow and uncertain no matter which method is used.
2) Soak the seed in filtered water for 24 hours.
3) Place the seeds on a layer of paper towel, vermiculite, perlite.
or peat-based seed compost in a resealable plastic bag, then cover with a layer of perlite, vermiculite or compost.
Seal the bag and place in a refrigerator for two to three weeks. Monitor the seeds to be sure the substrate stays damp but not wet.
4) Remove the bag from the refrigerator to a room-temperature area. At this point, the seeds can stay in the bag to germinate or may be moved to a pot or (weather permitting) outdoors. Seed germination will take one to two months. Although the trees prefer full sun for at least six hours per day, the seedlings need a gradual introduction. Also, be careful not to overwater or underwater the seedlings.
