CRAPE MYRTLE TREE SEEDS (Lagerstroemia indica)
The Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is one of the most popular ornamental flowering trees in warm climates, widely planted across the southern United States for its long-lasting, colorful summer blooms and attractive exfoliating bark. Often called the “Lilac of the South,” this species is valued for its extended flowering season and landscape versatility.
This deciduous tree or large shrub typically grows 10–30 feet tall with a spread of 15–25 feet, forming a graceful, rounded shape. In early summer, it produces large clusters of vibrant pink, red, purple, or white flowers on the tips of new growth, continuing to bloom well into fall and providing months of color.
The bark is thin, smooth, and attractively exfoliating, peeling away in patches to reveal shades of gray, tan, and brown underneath, adding year-round ornamental interest even after the flowering season ends.
🌱 Growing & Care Information
Light: Full sun required
Soil: Well-drained soil; adaptable to many soil types
Water: Moderate; drought tolerant once established
Growth: Fast-growing deciduous flowering tree or shrub
Climate: Best suited for warm temperate regions
Crape Myrtles perform well in landscape plantings, street plantings, hedges, and specimen gardens, and can also be grouped for dramatic floral displays. Light pruning can encourage more blooms and branching, though heavy pruning should be avoided late in the season to preserve cold hardiness.

Crape Myrtle Germination:
1) Soak seeds for 24 hours.
2) Cold stratify by placing in a zip lock bag of "moist vermiculite". It cannot be wet, or dry. It has to be slightly moist at all times or germination will not be possible. Place inside the fridge for 4 weeks. This will help increase germination rates.
3) Place seeds on top of a moist & well draining seed starting mix. Then cover with a very thin layer of sand. Use a spray bottle to mist sand until moist without over wetting. Cover with a piece of plastic with a few small holes cut into it to keep the humidity high.
4) Use a heated propagator to keep the soil at 80-85 degrees F.
5) Expect germination within 2-3 weeks. Once they have sprouted, remove the plastic and place in a sunny area, while always keeping the soil moist, and never wet.
