Chocolate Mimosa Tree Seeds (Acacia baileyana var. purpurea)
The Acacia baileyana var. purpurea, commonly known as Chocolate Mimosa or Purple Fernleaf Acacia, is a fast-growing ornamental tree native to Australia. It is highly valued for its striking purple-bronze new foliage, delicate fern-like leaf structure, and bright golden winter blossoms that create a strong visual contrast in the landscape.
This variety is especially prized among ornamental growers for its unusual purple-toned foliage, which is rare among acacias. The soft, feathery leaves emerge with deep purple coloration, particularly in cooler weather and strong sunlight, gradually transitioning to blue-green tones as they mature. In late winter to early spring, the tree produces abundant clusters of fragrant golden-yellow puffball flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.
Chocolate Mimosa is a fast-growing species that can quickly develop into a small ornamental tree or multi-stemmed specimen with an airy, open canopy. It typically reaches 15–25 feet in height, with a similar spread, and can grow up to 2–3 feet per year under ideal conditions.
This species thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and is highly drought tolerant once established. It performs well in poor or low-nutrient soils and requires minimal maintenance, making it a popular choice for low-water landscapes and ornamental gardens.
