SOUTHERN BALD SWAMP CYPRESS TREE SEEDS (Taxodium distichum)

The Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a native deciduous conifer found throughout the southeastern United States, especially in the Mississippi River basin, Gulf Coast, and coastal plain regions extending to the Mid-Atlantic states. This iconic tree is well known for thriving in wet, swampy environments, yet it is also highly adaptable to a wide range of soil and moisture conditions.

Although naturally found in flooded wetlands, bayous, and riverbanks, Bald Cypress trees are also commonly planted as ornamental landscape specimens due to their graceful form and exceptional seasonal beauty. In summer, they display soft, feathery green foliage, which transforms into brilliant golden-orange to rusty red tones in fall, creating a stunning visual display.

🌱 Growing & Care Information

Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Adaptable; prefers moist, acidic, sandy loam but tolerates many soil types
Water: Moderate to high; thrives in wet or periodically flooded conditions
Growth: Fast-growing deciduous conifer
Climate: Highly adaptable across a wide range of environments

The Bald Cypress is one of the few conifers that drops its needles in winter, making it a unique “swamp conifer.” It is extremely resilient, capable of growing in both standing water and relatively dry soils once established.

Bald Cypress Germination:

1) Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.

2) Place inside a zip lock bag of moist peat moss or vermiculite. Place inside of fridge for 90 days to cold stratify. This will break the seed's dormancy and allow them to sprout.

3) Plant seeds 1/4" deep in potting soil.

4) Keep wet with indirect light while using a humidity dome, or small piece of plastic to keep humidity levels high.

5) Expect germination in 4-6 weeks.
