American White Elm Tree Seeds (Ulmus americana) Fast Growing Shade Tree

The Ulmus americana, commonly known as American Elm, is a classic deciduous shade tree native to eastern North America. Renowned for its graceful vase-shaped form and rapid growth, it has long been valued as one of the most iconic landscape and street trees.

American Elm develops a broad, arching canopy that typically reaches 60 to 80 feet in height with an equally impressive spread. Its elegant branching structure creates a natural arching silhouette, making it a favorite for shade and large landscape plantings.

The tree produces small reddish-green flowers in early spring, followed by distinctive flat, wafer-like seeds called samaras. Its foliage consists of dark green, oval leaves that turn a soft yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.

The bark is dark gray with deep, interlacing ridges that become more pronounced as the tree matures, giving older specimens a rugged and stately appearance.

American Elm is highly adaptable and thrives in a wide range of soil conditions, including moist, well-drained, or occasionally dry sites. It performs best in full sun but can tolerate light shade. While historically impacted by Dutch Elm disease, disease-resistant selections and natural resilience have helped maintain its presence in modern landscapes.

American Elm Germination:

1) Soak in water, let stand for 24 hours.

2) Optional 30 day stratification period for higher germination rates: Place seeds inside of zip lock bag filled with moist peat moss. Place in fridge for 30 days before planting for higher germination rates.

3) Use a well draining seed staring mix. "Surface sow" seeds on top and place no more than 1/8" of soil on top.

4) Place in bright indirect light or use a grow lamp, while using a heated propagator mat to keep the soil at 75 degrees F.

5) Germination will occur between 10-30 days. (Stratified seeds tend to germinate more evenly and faster)
