American Rose Basket Flower Seeds (Centaurea americana)
The Centaurea americana, commonly known as American Basket Flower or Star Thistle Basket Flower, is a striking native wildflower valued for its large, showy blooms and strong appeal to pollinators. This fast-growing annual is widely appreciated in naturalized gardens, wildflower meadows, and cottage-style landscapes.
This species produces large 4–5 inch flower heads with soft pink to rose-colored petals that resemble delicate woven baskets, giving rise to its common name. The blooms are highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, while the seeds are also enjoyed by birds such as sparrows, bobwhites, and other small wildlife species.
American Basket Flower typically grows 3–5 feet tall with a spread of 2–3 feet, creating a tall, airy presence in the garden. Although it is technically an annual, it readily self-seeds, allowing it to return year after year under suitable conditions.
This hardy wildflower thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and is well adapted to a wide range of climates. It is especially valued for its ease of growth, drought tolerance once established, and ability to naturalize in open spaces.

Basket Flower Germination:
1) Use a commercial grade seed starting soil, and keep it "moist", not wet.
2) Barely cover the seeds with a very thin layer of soil. Be sure to keep moist as to not let it dry out. Retain moisture by using a plastic humidity dome, or a piece of plastic will work just as well to retain moisture and humidity.
3) Use a heated propagator to keep the temperature around 70 degrees F during the day, while letting it drop to around 55-60 degrees at night. It is very important to have these temperature fluctuations as it mimics the natural conditions they are used to outdoors.
4) Expect germination anywhere from 7-20 days.
