JOJOBA TREE SEEDS   (Simmondsia chinensis)

The Jojoba Plant (Simmondsia chinensis), also known as Goatnut, is a rare and highly valued desert shrub native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States, including Southern and Central California and the Sonoran Desert. Long-lived and drought-tolerant, jojoba is prized worldwide for the natural liquid wax oil produced from its seeds, widely used in cosmetics, skincare, hair care applications.

Jojoba grows as a dense, rounded evergreen shrub reaching up to 7 feet tall, with medium-green leathery leaves that remain year-round. It thrives in hot, dry climates and is exceptionally tolerant of poor, rocky, sandy, and saline soils when excellent drainage is provided. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants, with seed-producing “goatnut” fruits forming only on female plants when pollinated.

Used for centuries by Native American cultures, jojoba oil was traditionally applied for many different uses. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after plant oils in natural and commercial products.

Jojoba Germination:

1) Soak the seeds for 24 hours in water that is heated to 85-90 degrees F. Use a thermos to help keep the water warm for as long as possible. This will greatly increase germination rates. Also, for Jojoba seeds it is necessary to use a heated propagator mat set at 90-95 degrees F.

2) Sow seeds 1 inch deep in very well draining "sandy cactus starting mixed soil" and keep it barely moist and at 90-95 degrees F. Do not over water or keep wet at any time; just keep the soil barely moist but never let it dry out. Misting the soil with a spray bottle is optimal with little risk of overwatering.

3) Expect germination between 20 to 30 days. Without a heated propagator they could take months.
